My Grandmother has always been in charge of the chocolate pie in our family because she makes really great chocolate pie. Other family members are more than welcome to have their hand at the other pies for the holidays… but grandmother always makes the chocolate pie (well the pecan too). They’re delicious. For a couple of week’s now hubby has been craving chocolate pie and I finally got around to whipping up a pie after work last week for him. I’d had a long day at work, but it was 8pm and hubby was still at work and wasn’t to arrive for another couple hours so I decided he deserved a little pie.
I’d forgotten how exhausting making pie can be, especially chocolate pie… when you heat up the chocolate mixture in the double boiler and mix until it thickens. Well let me tell you… it takes awhile and your arm starts to hurt. And after you’ve been at work all day and you’re really tired and mad that hubby isn’t home from work… it seems even worse! BUT it was worth it… cause it was sooo good! It had been too long since I’d some of Grandmother’s Chocolate Pie!
With each slice that hubby has consumed since I first made it, he keeps reinstating how good it is. I agree but to be honest, I’m not that big on pie so I can’t say how it compares to other chocolate pies. But its certainly very good chocolate pie in my book! Please excuse the 2 day old whipped cream on this slice… I contemplated making a fresh batch for a better photo, but hey – this is how we eat it. The leftover whipped cream may not look very pretty but it still tastes good!
Grandmother’s Chocolate Pie
1 9-inch pie crust, cooked & completely cooled
1 can (12 oz) evaporated milk
1 c water
1 c white sugar
2/3 c all-purpose flour
4 heaping Tbsp cocoa
2 large eggs, beaten
1 tsp pure vanilla extract
Sift flour, sugar & cocoa together. Pour evaporated milk & water into mixture and mix thoroughly. Add beaten eggs and mix well. Cook in top of double boiler over simmering water until thick, about 20 minutes; stirring constantly. Remove from heat and add vanilla. Mix with hand mixer if lumpy. Pour into cooled pie crust and top with whipped cream when completely cool. Keep refrigerated.
