Mild Taco Seasoning

Homemade taco seasoning is super easy to make and totally worth the effort. I like making my own taco seasoning cause we can adapt it to our tastes. For instance, I use ancho chili powder in mine rather than traditional chili powder that you would find in packet seasoning. We love that deep smoky flavor of ancho chili powder. Ancho chili powder packs in the flavor without a whole lot of heat. Like heat? Add a little cayenne and/or more crushed red pepper. Play with the recipe, see what you like. :-) You won’t want to use those little packets again!

Need an excuse to make a batch? Try out my Creamy Taco Mac. Its delicious!

Taco Seasoning

Mild Taco Seasoning
Yield: Equivalent of 4 packets of taco seasoning

1/4 cup ancho chili powder
1 tsp garlic powder
1 tsp onion powder
1 tsp crushed red pepper flakes
1 tsp dried oregano
2 tsp paprika
2 Tbsp ground cumin
2 tsp sea salt
1 tsp black pepper (optional)

Combine all ingredients in a small bowl. Store in an airtight container.

To use: Use approximately 2 tablespoons of taco seasoning in place of a packet of commercial taco seasoning. To prepare taco meat, add seasoning & 1 cup of water to one pound of browned meat and simmer over low heat until liquid is gone.

I hate using the seasoning packets, so this is perfect! I always want to do it on my own and never know what to use.

I love making my own taco seasoning. I gave it away as homemade gifts last Christmas. Can’t wait to try this recipe.

I saw Annie’s post on your taco mac today and had to check out the real deal! Looks fantastic and just the type of meal my family loves – especially with that homemade taco seasoning!

I tried this taco seasoning last night and loved it! I’m almost ashamed to admit that I’ve never seasoned my taco meat before. But now that I’ve found this I’ll never go back to plain ground beef in my tacos again!

Would using ground chipotle peppers in place of the chili powder work?

Did you mean fresh peppers? Chile powder is just ground dried peppers so if you’re wanting to use dried ground chipotles, that should work!
